A traveler was walking through the streets of a strange city when he met a street merchant selling homemade trinkets. The trinkets were made from discarded wire and recycled metal and the traveler admired their intricacy and beauty. After asking the price, the traveler was surprised that they were so cheap. “Why do you charge so little? Don’t you know how wonderful these trinkets are?” The merchant smiled and shook his head. “Anyone could make these. They don’t take much effort and are very easy to put together.” “They may be easy for you, but in all of my travels, I’ve never met anyone who could make something like this.” the traveler said before paying the small price and walking away. A couple of years later, the traveler was back in the same city, walking the same streets and he met the same street merchant selling the same trinkets again. Upon asking the price, the traveler was surprised again, not because they were cheap, but because the price had increased tenfold. “Why the dramatic increase in price?” he asked. The merchant smiled and responded, “Because now I know my value.” The traveler laughed and paid the full price. I wrote this story as a reminder that we all have something of value. We all have unique skills and can do things naturally and easily that others find difficult. Some people don’t know their value and underestimate their capabilities, whilst others know what they are good at, develop their skills to an elite level and are able to find their niche.
