A true leader does not need to manipulate electoral processes to win an election. He earns the trust and followership of his people before he goes to the poll. You dont vote him in based on political party because all the political parties in Nigeria have faulty structures and ideologically deficient. We still need to make do with credible personalities because of the apparent challenges of coping with independent candidates. Incidentally, personalities of the candidates that stand to be elected under whatever political nomenclature are defective products have been tainted with the putrid essence of partisan politics of ethnic jingoism or outright privitisation. Until political parties in Nigeria are built beyond one or two individuals with dirty past who impose their stooges on unsuspecting and gullible to score cheap political points - covering their shady deals and protecting their parochial interest at the expense of the commonwealth of the masses, Nigeria will continue to get it wrong. The Anambra governorship election is a harbinger of the general election in 2015 and if as a microcosm we fail to deliver a free and fair election, how much more pregress are we going to record in 2015 given the political variables that have not been stabilised which may spring more challenges for the actors and the electoral umpire. In liberal democracies, people, beyond money politics and other incidental inducements to suborn them, know who their leaders are! You dont steal trust which is the nucleus of followership but you earn it through tenacity of purpose and selfless services to the people you purportedly come to serve. If I may ask, how many of our so-called leaders dressed in borrowed robes can DIE for the governed today? That is part of the sacrifice and the most important aspect they are found wanting. They are not our true shepherds! They have come to continue from where their godfathers stopped;to perpetuate dominion over ther wretched of the earth;to hold on to their heirloom and hegemony because they were born leaders. I tell you, they can rig elections but they cannot win forever! Power and authority is service! If, as a leader, you abuse these sacred terms of leadership, they will see to your tragic end no matter how long you continue to bask in your delusion of grandeur which has been the fate of so many so-called leaders with warped mentality the world over. Leadership has been instrumental to the fall and rise of great men, and your greatness as a leader lies in how much that ingredient of trust is sustained in you even when you must have fallen as a result of contamination with the unjust system and its players. As we entrust our future to these custodians, lets us remember all men cannot be the same. Therefore, lets spot the difference between A and B to create an enduring impression of the level of political consciousness we have attained over the years to chart a new course en route the Promised Land. And for those standing for public office, it is a big responsibility beyond rhetorics. We need change in our leadership style;we must be ready to live and die for the people - vicarious undertaking! Anything short of that from both stakeholders, no amount of election rigging and partisan complacency will save us all from the imminent! We can do much better!
