A very atypical new poem THE ONLY CLUB Shining like a beacon in those not quite forgotten days of joy Standing out against the mediocrity of the other hoi polloi Meaning something in those times of selfish attitude That it existed at all gotta feel that deep gratitude New York had Studio 54, Manchester had its own scene Living in those times, being part of it all, was it all a dream? Hanging with those guys who changed our way of being A New Order happening, our minds they were freeing The Hacienda Club, only place to be, pure magic A block of flats on that spot now, purely tragic House and rave music, here’s where it all started A night out there wasn’t for the faint hearted Cacophony of noise, people jostling wall to wall All life happening, a who ’s who roll call Wharhol had his Factory, we had one of our own Whitworth Street West, getting ourselves in the zone DJ’s to rock the place, early pioneers of trance The crowd united in one thought…lets dance! The Hacienda Club, only place to be, pure magic A block of flats on that spot now, purely tragic Fifteen years it managed to hang on in there Surviving on record sales and a wing and a prayer That it lasted so long has to be incredible One day it was going to all be over, was inevitable Establishment found a way to bring it all to an end Always remembered by those who lived the legend The film trying to capture the spirit of the day Not quite. “You had to be there” as they say… The Hacienda Club, only place to be, pure magic A block of flats on that spot now, purely tragic Dean Fraser 2014
