A very insightful presentation. He mentioned that great universities around the world get their reputation partly and not insignificantly from their undergraduate cohort. They provide great alumni, they provide recruits to the universitys graduate program and they are the universitys ambassadors worldwide. 1 in 3 students at the ANU are international students and they come from about 70 countries around the world and overall contributes 20% of ANUs revenue. This is a great pool to groom international ambassadors for the ANU comprising of both current students and Alumni. However, I believe ANU is not tapping into this pool as effectively as it could have. We have to rethink student engagement in the University and properly instil a mindset and a sense of pride in ALL students that being part of the ANU is being part of something great. I believe this rethink needs to be done at the University level as well as the student politics level. International students are one of the integral parts of the ANU but in my experience I think that the framework that are in place at many levels, from student politics, leadership positions and in engagement at the University level are nowhere near representative of this reality. Old and some misplaced mindsets and paradigms that underpin this system need to be re-evaluated and I hope we can continue to have this conversation for the good of the ANU next year! I will work this summer to come up with a proper reflection of where in my experience and opinion I think we are in terms of international students engagement and how I think we can move forward to correct this imbalance.
