A very sweet intact orange male tabby has been hanging around the neighborhood for the past couple of weeks. Weve been feeding him, hoping hed return during the day when I could get him to the vet. Last night, I decided just to keep him in the laundry room overnight, away from my other cats. This cat is the sweetest kitty you could ever meet. Very well behaved, very affectionate, sat in my lap for long periods of time and gave me head bumps. We really wanted to add him to the family. Hes FeLV negative, which is good. He had ear mites and fleas, and is being treated for those. The problem is, hes FIV positive. Were debating whether we should still add him to the household. The literature is very mixed on this. I know several people who have added FIV+ cats to households of FIV- cats, with no transmission over many years. Our problem: our youngest cat is a storm rescue cat and he has many lingering psychological issues. He bonded with all my cats who were here before him, but whenever he sees any other cat through the windows, he goes wild. Emits loud feral meows and will try to go through the glass to get to the other cat. From what Ive read, the main risk of transmission is through deep bite wounds received in a serious fight. Im not sure Ill be able to safely integrate the new cat with the existing cat hierarchy. Im afraid to try, because I dont want to be the cause of a bad fight. It might be best if I can find this lovable guy a home as a single cat or in a household with other FIV+ cats. He would make a wonderful companion for anyone. The vet says he appears to be very healthy otherwise. Would anybody in the Huntsville, AL area love to give this wonderful guy a home? He may never exhibit symptoms of FIV. On the other hand, he could get pretty sick someday. Whoever takes him needs to be willing to treat him and keep him alive as long as his quality of life is good. Im also contacting all the no-kill shelters in the area to see if they know of anybody who may be able to take him. This kitty is so sweet, he deserves a chance at life.
