A very well written, informed, article (via Justin Flosi) While I disagree with much of Friedmans logic... a lot of it actually... I think hes provoking a lot of very important thoughts and raising the right questions: At what point do the ideals of secularism destroy its own defenses? The greatest irony of any integrated society is the integration of those that would have it disintegrated. But I dont, as Friedman argues, think its impossible for those of radically opposing beliefs to find common ground in the public space. We wouldnt have commerce if they did. Europe wouldnt have matched its supply with demand for immigrant labor and visa versa. (Its a good read... just ignore the annoyance of Friedman using Islam and Christianity as metonymies or an entire geopoliticalsocial borg. There are much more artful ways to do this that do not make [unintentional?] value statements of the dominant faith of a massively multi-faceted society.... ...Jihad v.s. McWorld being my favorite.) stratfor/weekly/war-between-two-worlds#axzz3OkVaYMpt
