A week of horror accidents at the coast Three people have been killed in road accidents at the coast over the past weekend. On Friday evening an elderly couple from Windhoek, identified as the Deputy Director of Culture and Heritage in the Ministry of Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture, Mr Andre Strauss and his wife Annie, were instantly killed at around 18:30 while travelling towards Arandis on the B2 road. The accident, involving their 4x4 Hilux bakkie and a truck, occurred about 1km from the turn-off to Husab mine. According to official sources a different truck had broken down prior to the accident and was parked on the roadway, without any lights or emergency displays visible. The driver of the truck, which collided with the couples vehicle, apparently saw the broken-down truck very late and had to swerve in order to avoid a collision with the stationary truck. This resulted in the fatal head-on collision with the Hilux bakkie. Rescue workers battled for about two hours to cut the trapped couple out of the vehicle. The truck driver sustained minor injuries and had to be rushed to the Swakopmund State hospital. Earlier on Friday afternoon the owner of Skubbe Bar, Mr Paul de Witt of Henties Bay was killed in a horrific car crash involving a truck on the gravel road that runs behind Dune 7. Unofficial sources revealed that the vehicle in which Mr de Witt was driving collided head-on with a truck, travelling in the opposite direction. At around 13:20 on Saturday another accident near the turn-off to Dolphin beach, on the road between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, left four people with considerable injuries when the vehicle they were traveling in left the road and overturned. Emergency services confirmed that two people were seriously injured in the crash near Dolphin beach and Virgil Majiedt, as well as Patrick Nashande were rushed to Windhoek by Eagle Christian Ambulance Services on Saturday afternoon with serious injuries. According to Mr Terence Ward of ECAS three of the occupants were thrown out of the vehicle; the driver who had his seatbelt on, had to be cut out of the wreck. The driver and one other passenger sustained minor injuries.
