A wonderful Message from the Hon. Christopher Pyne, Minister for Education & Leader Of the House. Learning the basics at school is the foundation for success in school – and ultimately success in the workplace and life. Unfortunately in recent years, our literacy and numeracy standards have fallen. Improving education requires more than money. The Abbott Government is increasing funding to schools – by 37% over four years – but we are also determined to lift standards. That’s why, this week we released a review of the Australian curriculum. Based on 1,600 submissions and expert advice, this review recommended a curriculum that is less cluttered, more balanced and which gets back to basics with a greater emphasis on literacy and numeracy. It also recommends greater parent involvement with schools. You can download read more. The curriculum review has received a positive response and we will work closely with the states and territories to implement changes and lift standards. The Abbott Government will continue to drive a Students First approach to education, focussed on teacher quality, school autonomy, engaging parents and strengthening the curriculum.
