A year ago today, I arrived at my Pop Daves house to help clean out his belongings and get it up for sale. It was with mixed feelings. Pop received a terminal liver cancer diagnosis, and rather than suffer through the horrible treatments that would inevitably be ineffective and further reduce his quality of life, he took his life on his own terms. I miss him awfully, and instinctively reach for the phone on holidays and when I have accomplished something I know hed be pleased to hear. It hurts, but I resepect his decision. He was a proud, self-made and self-sufficient man. He had his many adventures, and lived a life others could only dream of. He was a test pilot for the Navy, and very narrowly missed being an astronaut. I respect the courage it took to decide he would not wait out his days in pain, nor to put his family through the difficulties of watching him suffer. But God Almighty, I miss that man. We understood eachother, in a family that mostly frowned on nonconformity. He marveled at my determination to be free, doing my thing, and ignoring what everyone elses idea of success and happiness was. He also supported me in my dreams, and if not for his contribution, my baby, The PA Burlesque Festival, would never have happened. So when you come on August 8 &9 to the Mauch Chunk Opera House, get a beer or glass of wine, and toast David Frailey. And then, as he always said, Let the good times roll!
