A year ago today: We were without power. My grandmother had a stroke (She has made a great recovery). Flood waters from the beach down the block from my fathers house destroyed the neighborhood leaving many of my friends houses uninhabitable. This included my fathers house, forcing him out from then until at least that January and taking all our personal belongings with the water. It was a violent, unexpected surge. It left the area and ourselves in disarray. After a year has passed, it has been a rarity that Ive seen my friends. No longer will the group of boys and girls that called for me early on the weekends come knocking at my door in their large groups. No longer will I film short movies on the Island with everyone acting in it from around the block. No more riding bikes to the deli, group trips to the mall, going down to the beach in the summer, snowball fights in the winter, causing chaos in the New Dorp Beach area. The storm drifted us apart, we got older, and the group couldnt hold a steady enough time to gather together all at once. I miss all of them. I miss the way things used to be. Not just for myself, but for all affected by Sandy. These good people did not deserve this. That red sticker on the houses coming down one by one... Its enough to give you the chills. I hope all is well or getting better for anyone affected by Sandy. I truly miss you all...
