A young Women (Anita) Laska Valfish had been at Auschwitz, and what saved her from death was that she was talented on the cello the rest of her family perished because they were not talented. And she says to Stephen Fry, that she was sitting and picking lice from her friends scalp, when the camp doctor came in... And says “you have probably heard of him, Josef Mengele” and I thought oh God he wants to learn how a musicians brain works or something like that. And He walks into the room and Snaps his fingers at me. And I thought of thank god he just wants me to play. So I follow him into his office and he points to the corner and I go and sit and begin to play..Stephen Fry asks her if she remembers the piece and shes says of course I remember .. it was Traumerei By Schumann.. and when I had finished I packed my instrument away and left. And Stephen asks if he said thank you. And the women says “you sweet boy you still don’t understand.. Do you thank your telephone or your washing machine..we were not human to them, the germans.. that is why they could do what they did to us.
