ISLAMABAD: The government on Friday withdrew the electricity tariff hike notification. During proceedings of the load shedding suo moto case, Attorney General Munir A Malik informed the apex court that the notification had been withdrawn and the government would send a new summary to NEPRA to determine electricity prices. He added that the government was paying Rs150 billion as subsidies for electricity. NEPRA chairman told the Supreme Court that it may take up to three weeks to determine the electricity prices. Chief Justice remarked that the government did not allow NEPRA to operate independently. Speaking to Federal Minister for Water and Power Khawaja Asif, Chief Justice Chaudry said that he (Asif) during proceedings of the Rental Power case had informed the court that NEPRA and not the government would determine the electricity tariff. Chief Justice Chaudhry further remarked that industries were given gas at a subsidised rate but there was nothing being done for the benefit of farmers. Khawaja Asif said that providing industries with subsidised gas was an old policy and this was being evaluated. On October 1, the Supreme Court had taken notice of the increase the electricity tariff.
