Puttur Kattu (world famous bone setting with herbs) It was in 1881, Gopal Raju who accidentally found the healing property of the herbal foliage while hunting. Hebrought home a back-broken rabbit on a bed of some leaves he picked in the forest. To his surprise hefound the animal limping. He made paste of the same and applied on its back. In a few days, the animal ranand disappeared in the forest. And to Gopal Raju one truth appeared: leaves had some medicinal quality! Next few years, Gopal Raju experimented on limb-fractured chicken, calves and sheep. Convinced, he wenton to treat human beings. He became a successful native doctor, and people from far and wide beelined toPuthur for bone-setting, and it came to be called “ Puttur Kattu” .During the colonial rule, there was wareverywhere, wounded soldiers were many. He was treating them to fitness. Gopal Raju’s services wereutilized by the British rulers. That took him to places, treating the wounded soldiers and civilians throughoutthe country. The World Wars came, he had more wounded armymen to treat. He had the unique honour of free railwaypass to travel anywhere in the country. Gopal Raju passed on the legacy to his sister’s son, SuraparajuSubba Raju, who was a revenue official in the British government. He gave up his lucrative job to serve thehumanity. The great Subba Raju applied his learned and administrative skills and laid the foundation for amission that is the bone-setting hospital at Puthur
