************ ABOUT US ************ Disabled UK has been running for almost two years now and was set up to give advice, support and information or just for a place to come and have a general chat or even get cheered up. Our members and Admin are from a wide variety of backgrounds including, Welfare Advisers, Solicitors, Bloggers, Economists and Campaigners just to name a few. We also work with a number of other groups & organisations so if we dont know the answer we will be able to put you on to someone that will. We believe that sharing information to as many people as possible is the best way to bring about awareness not just about all disabilities but about how the world around them is directly effecting them along with how to put your voice forward to make things better for us all. Our group only wants to help make the UK and the world a better place for disabled people and we do this by helping fight for the betterment of disabled services, care etc. ******************* OUR PROJECTS ******************* We currently have three projects we are working which are as follows: Project 1 - Accessible Homes in the Social Sector Report This report outlines all the flaws in council policies and the lack of accessible housing, It outlines how they can provide essential accessible housing, future plan for enough accessible housing, Amend polices to make reasonable adjustments for disabled persons in requirements of a Home for Life (a home that a disabled person will be able to live in and will not have to move as its suitable for their needs throughout their life. It also outlines that by changing some of their policies and creating more homes for the disabled and elderly based on local disability statistics that they could save money on multiple budgets. (You can find the current draft copy of this report in the files section of our group.) Project 2 - Finding EU legislation that will overturn the wheelchair space bus ruling. We are currently in contact with the EU Transport Dept. in Brussels, the contact we have there is now slaving through legislation to see if they can find any legal legislation that will make the UK over turn the appeals court ruling and give back the wheelchair spaces on buses as a priority wheelchair space. Project 3 - Disabled Public Transport Report This will outline the problems that disabled people face when using public transport this includes Buses, Coaches, Trains and Planes. We will be looking at how transport for the disabled can be improved and what major improvements all forms of transport need to make in order to accommodate those with disabilities. Project 3 - pushing for the EU to improve upon the rights of disabled people within the Equality Act 2010 to cover transport and services Currently the EU protects certain characteristics but not all have the same levels of protection, we are asking the EU parliament to protect the disabled characteristic as strongly as they have protected the race characteristic (Update Dec 2014). We believe that this group should be a safe friendly environment for all and our admins do their up most to ensure this every day.
