ACCOLADE TO AN ICON, DR. MUOYO OKOME AT 60 Dr. Muoyo Okome P.T. Ph.D. graduated from University of Ibadan, Nigeria (B.Sc. Physiotherapy) 1977. He served at Murtala Mohammed Hospital, Kano during his National Youth Service Corp year (1977 to 1978). After the NYSC year he was employed by the Health Management Board of the Oyo State Government. He worked at Ogbomoso Baptist Hospital and ran the itinerant Physiotherapy service at Ogbomoso in 1978. He was at Ring Road Hospital, Ibadan from 1979 and 1980. He resigned from Oyo State and transferred his service to the then University of Ife Teaching Hospital Complex and was posted to serve at both Wesley Hospital, Ilesha and General Hospital, Ilesha from 1980 to 1981. Thereafter, he departed for the USA to pursue postgraduate studies. He graduated with Master of Science degree in Physical Therapy from Long Island University, New York in 1982 and Ph.D (Pathokinesiology) from the New York University, New York in 1989. He was an adjunct Professor teaching Anatomy at Long Island University and currently is a Clinician in New York. He is a Member and Past-Secretary, Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy. He is protem President of Association of Nigerian Physical Therapists, USA. He is happily married to his lovely wife Professor (Mrs.) Okome and they are blessed with two wonderful male children. I write in my capacity as the Chairman of the governing Council and President, Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy (NSP) to wish the amiable and gentleman, Dr. Muoyo Okome happy 60th birthday (24th September, 2013). He is one of the greatest gifts bestowed on Physiotherapy profession. This rare gem is phenomenal and being with him will enliven your mind and heighten your intellect. He is currently the chief troubleshooter, master strategist and adviser extraordinaire to the NSP President and by extension to the NSP governing Council. He carefully crafted and charted the most desirable roadmap for our great profession, Physiotherapy in Nigeria through his key note address at the opening ceremony of the 52nd NSP Annual Scientific Conference entitled “Unity in Diversity, Unity in Concert and Regression Potential.” Unfortunately, the hurricane Sandy did not permit him to travel in person to Nigeria to deliver the address (the address can be accessed via nigeriaphysio.org welcome page). The Physiotherapy brand tagline for the NSP “Our Hands aid Healing and Recovery” being highlighted and widely published was proposed by him. He recently prophesized that NSP will be able to continue on her surge mode and the profession will move forward if we can embrace “Peace, Unity and Legacy”. No wonder this great and highly intelligent Physiotherapist par excellence is nominated upon 2013 AGM approval to receive the highest honour of the NSP, the Fellow of the NSP. I join all other well meaning physiotherapists around the globe to celebrate Dr. Muoyo Okome and wish him many more fruitful years. Happy 60th birthday my mentor!!! Taiwo J. Oyewumi President, Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy
