ACROSS THE POND: Back To Life (However Do You Want Me)--Soul II Soul featuring Caron Wheeler (1989): While Richard Marx was heading to No. 1 this very week 25 years ago with his second No. 1 hit, Satisfied, in the U.S., on the other side of the Atlantic, a unique song that became an early hip-hop classic was hitting No. 1 in the UK and beginning a four-week run at the top. Back To Life was the second Top 40 (and Top 5) hit for London-based Soul II Soul, whose three main components of the group, Jazzie B (born January 7, 1963), his co-producer Nellee Hooper (born January 26, 1963) and lead singer Caron Wheeler (January 19, 1963) were all born 19 days apart! That rarely ever happens. Back To Life would dominate the chart and music scene in the UK in the summer of 89. The song would cross the pond to the U.S. and hit No. 4 pop and No. 1 R&B here in late 1989. By the way, Soul II Soul broke up a few years later, but are now back together and all three aforementioned members are a main part of the act. Enjoy!
