ACROSS THE POND: Crazy Little Thing Called Love--Queen (1979) ... Sometimes, the easiest songs are those written in mere minutes. And it was 10 minutes for lead singer Freddie Mercury to write Crazy Little Thing Called Love in a bathtub in Germany while the band was recording their new album at the time called The Game. Channeling his inner Elvis Presley, Mercury wrote the song on acoustic guitar -- which was an instrument he had little working knowledge of, saying later he was glad he didnt, not to make the song more complex than it was. He took it to drummer Roger Taylor and bass guitarist John Deacon, who helped to shape the song in session and Brian May put down the final guitar lick that made Crazy Little Thing Called Love a No. 2 hit on this day 35 years ago in England for the second straight week, kept out of the No. 1 spot by Dr. Hooks When Youre In Love With A Beautiful Woman. Though defeated from hitting No. 1 in the UK, the song crossed over to the U.S. in early 1980 and hit No. 1 for four weeks, becoming the bands first No. 1 hit here and the first true 1980s smash hit. Enjoy!
