ACT Women’s Premier League Round 7 – Review Sunday 18th May ANU WFC 0 ACTAS 4 (Mikayla Van Deyk (2) Jamie Berkeley (2)) ACTAS continued their excellent start to the season with their fourth win in five matches as they compounded ANU WFC’s miserable start to the 2014 ACT Women’s Premier League with a 4-0 victory at ANU Willows on Sunday afternoon. The Academy youngsters have certainly found their feet in the competition after a difficult introduction and must surely be considered as a genuine title threat with a vibrant, attacking team that looks lethal going forward. ANU WFC was forced, once again, to re-shuffle their deck with a number of injuries and unavailability meaning a number of first grade debuts. And it showed early on as the University team struggled to come to terms with the fast-faced ball movement of the visitors. Indeed, the match was virtually done as a contest by the half time break as ACTAS raced into a 3-0 lead that had the points in the bag. As has been the norm for most of ANU’s matches this season though they hot back after the interval and began to string together some worthwhile moves of their own. Lisa Somsouk and Stephanie Griffin were outstanding in defence for ANU but even this pair couldn’t prevent Mikayla Van Deyk from scoring twice for ACTAS, the forward now has nine goals for the season, whilst Jamie Berkeley also netted a double. Monaro burst out of gate and took the lead through Brittany Palombi after just five minutes. Palombi’s strike from the edge of the area had too much power on it for Weston keeper, Michelle Tifan who got a hand to it. Meg McLaughlin then doubled Monaro’s lead just two minutes later when she knocked the ball around Tifan and slotted it home into the empty net. Monaro then added their third just before the half hour mark when Brittany Palombi collected the ball in her own half, before making a stunning run all the way into Weston’s penalty area, just managing to tap the ball into the net past the advancing Tifan. The halftime break couldn’t come sooner for Weston who found themselves 4-0 after Ashleigh Palombi set up McLaughlin for another easy finish. Much like they did a few weeks back against Belconnen, Weston came out in the second half a much different outfit. They were then rewarded for their efforts when Hope Wilkins’ cross found Kate Walker who finished smartly. However, Weston Molonglo were unable to make their chances count as Gillian Raymond made a couple of top saves. Monaro extending their lead further as both McLaughlin and Brittany Palombi completed their hat tricks. The scoring was finished by Ashleigh Palombi who had two goals denied due to offside earlier in the game finally broke the offside trap, rounding Tifan to finish off the match. Weston-Molonglo FC: 1. In a game of limited chances for both teams, a 68th minute free-kick from Rachael Goldstein proved the difference and gave FC a much-needed three points to keep them on the coat-tails of the leading clubs having played two games more than Belconnen United and ACTAS who have matches to make up. Goldstein’s strike direct from a dead-ball with twenty-two minutes remaining, was her fourth goal of the season and finally broke a deadlock that seemed certain to remain until the final whistle. With both teams having a solid midfield unit and a defence that was strong in the tackle and well positioned to thwart attacking raids throughout it was little surprise that the game was congested in the centre of the field with tackles firm and no quarter asked or given. Whilst FC remains in touch at the top, Tuggeranong slips five points off the top four into fifth place and in danger of dropping off the pace unless they can rediscover the form that saw them claim two wins and a draw earlier in the season. Bronwyn Studman was a standout again for FC alongside the tenacious Eden Stoddard. Canberra FC: 1. Georgia STEWART, 2. Eden STODDARD, 3. Alice CHURCHILL, 4. Bronwyn STUDMAN, 5. Aleisha TUPPER, 8. The match was done by the eleventh minute mark as the Blue Devils roared out of the blocks and into a three-goal lead. Caitlin Munoz opened the scoring for the visitors in the 6th minute before Grace Field stroked home her fifth of the season on the ten minute mark. When Munoz bagged her second of the game only a minute later, the writing was on the wall for Olympic. To their credit the home team reorganised and provided a stiffer and more resolute challenge thereafter but still couldn’t prevent Belconnen’s leading scorer, Michaela Day, from extending the lead to 4-0 at the break. The action relented a little after the resumption of play but Belconnen still found time to score three more goals. Jessica McEwan made it 5-0 three minutes into the second half before Day crashed home her ninth goal of a productive year in the 61st minute. Chances came and went following the sixth goal but there was still time for Talia Backhouse, summoned from the substitutes’ bench, to round out a 7-0 win with the final goal fourteen minutes from time.
