ACTION ALERT: CALL CONGRESS TODAY Congress is working on a package that will expand and make permanent the food donation tax deduction and other charitable tax provisions, and they may vote today or tomorrow. The Oklahoma Food Banks rely heavily on charitable donations from farmers, local retailers, and distribution centers. In fact, nearly 70 percent of the food we receive and distribute comes through donations from the food industry. When determining where to send excess product, food industry leaders often face a dilemma; it is often cheaper to send it to landfills rather than package and transport the product to food banks and other charitable organizations. Thus, the food donation tax deductions play a key role in fighting hunger and reducing the 70 billion pounds of food wasted each year. Reducing barriers to food donations diverts excess food from the landfill and into the homes of hungry families. Time is truly of the essence. Here is how you can help: Dial (888) 398-8702 Connect to your Representative first. Ask to speak to the staff member who handles hunger and nutrition issues. Tell them your name and the town that you’re calling from. Deliver this important message: As your constituent and supporter of the Oklahoma Food Banks, I am calling you today to ask you to pass the charitable tax extenders before Congress adjourns for the year. This legislation would help ensure our food bank has the food and the funds needed to continue supporting those in need in our community. Be sure to dial back in and speak with both of your senators.
