ACTION ALERT! LET DUKE ENERGY AND DENR KNOW THEY SHOULD CLEAN UP DUKE’S COAL ASH POLLUTION OF MOUNTAIN ISLAND LAKE! Duke Energy and DENR need to hear from you now on their proposed settlement that is open for public comment and does nothing to clean up coal ash pollution at Mountain Island Lake. The deadline is August 14 to stop this do-nothing proposal! Duke has dumped 2.7 million tons of coal ash in large unlined lagoons right on the banks of Mountain Island Lake, the drinking water reservoir for the entire Charlotte-Gastonia-Mount Holly region. The coal ash is separated from the lake only by earthen berms that leak hundreds of thousands of gallons of polluted water into the Lake and groundwater. Based on years’ worth of data documenting these problems, DENR has stated under oath that Duke’s unlawful pollution is “a serious danger to the health, safety and welfare of the people of North Carolina” and “serious harm to the water resources of the State.” Here’s what’s wrong with the proposed settlement: •The Duke-DENR deal does not stop the pollution of Mountain Island Lake and groundwater – it lets Duke continue pouring contaminated water into the Lake; •The Duke-DENR deal leaves 2.7 million tons of coal ash in unlined leaking lagoons on the banks of the drinking water reservoir for Charlotte, Gastonia, and Mount Holly; •The Duke-DENR deal only requires more studies instead of cleanup, when DENR and Duke have known about the pollution for years and have done nothing to stop it. •The Duke-DENR deal includes only a token fine of less than $40,000 that forgives years of documented illegal pollution by this multi-billion dollar company. Tell DENR and DUKE: 1.You want a public hearing on the proposal so the public’s voice can be heard. 2.Stop the pollution of Mountain Island Lake. 3.It is time to take action and end the delays. 4.Duke should move its coal ash away from Mountain Island Lake and store it safely in a dry state in a lined landfill. 5.Duke and DENR should take immediate action to protect the drinking water reservoir for 860,000 people. Your comments must be received by August 14! Send them to: [email protected] or Lisa Palmer N.C. DENR Division of Water Quality 1617 Mail Service Center Raleigh, NC 27699-1617
