ACTION ALERT on BABY DNA BILL!! CALL House Reps and tell them to vote NO on the bipartisan HHS omnibus bill. The MN House will VOTE on the Baby DNA bill on this Wednesday, April 9. It will actually be voted on as part of the HHS omnibus bill. House File 2402 (Liebling(D), Zerwas(R)) The original Baby DNA bill was incorporated into the omnibus bill. Sections 7-13 of the omnibus bill repeal parent consent requirements and end genetic privacy at birth. We expect there will likely be an amendment to strip the language (Sections 7 - 13) out of the bill. Call now. Call tomorrow. Call Wednesday. Call and email while theyre on the floor. If they dont answer, leave a message. And call back. Let them know youre watching their vote on Baby DNA. Tell them by email and by phone that the Baby DNA sections of the bill (Sections 7 - 13) must be deleted. That parent consent should not be repealed, genetic privacy should not be eliminated at birth. Genetic research without parent consent should not be allowed. Opt-out is not consent. Opt-out gives government first dibs to the babys DNA and genetic test results until and only if the parents ever figure it out and then do the work to get their babys DNA back. The only true consent is opt-in, where nothing happens without a signed permission form. Todays law require that parents given written informed consent (permission form) before the government can use or long-time store the childs DNA and genetic test results. Tell them even the ACLU opposes it. (testimony) The HHS omnibus bill author is Tina Liebling (R-Rochester) and co-author is Nick Zerwas (R-Elk River). DFL author and co-authors of the original Baby DNA bill that has been incorporated into the HHS omnibus bill are: author Kim Norton (Rochester) and co-authors, Erin Murphy (St. Paul), Thomas Huntley (Duluth), Tina Liebling (Rochester), Carlos Mariani (St. Paul), Diane Loeffler (Mpls) and Jim Davnie (Mpls.) CORRECTION: In todays CCHF MN Legislative Report, we incorrectly stated the HHS Omnibus bill related to Baby DNA was HF 2150 (Huntley). Its actually House File 2402 as discussed above (Liebling(D)/Zerwas(R))
