ACUTE RHINITIS(Common cold) Aetiology: Due to viral infection by means of Air borne droplet infection. Pathology: There is acute generalized hyperemia of the nasal mucosa & engorgement of the glandular structures followed by profuse secretion . Pathogenesis: Viruses are – rhino virus,influence virus,adeno virus, Echo virus. Clinical features: 1.Earliest symptoms may be tickling,irritation,sneezing or dryness of the nose. Then the nose get blocked one side more than the other. 2.Temperature may be raised. 3.Headache 4. Ear feels heavy. 5.Gradually the dischare becomes scanty but thicker. Treatment : 1. Patient should stay in bed for quick recovery. 2. Analgesics –relieve the pain as well as control temperature. 3. Nasal decongestants in the form of Drops are helpful to clear the nose. 4. Antibiotics should be used. 5. steam inhalation. Prophylatics: 1.Avoid contact with infected person 2. increase resistance by vitamins,good food,well ventilated room,etc.
