ADA American Dental Association Member Update Dentists Reportedly Victims of Possible Tax Identity Theft While the ADA has heard from only one member, communications from several state dental societies have indicated members are among the taxpayers reporting that when they filed their federal taxes this year they learned their taxes had already been filed, most likely by an identity thief. Last week, the Michigan Dental Association alerted its members after receiving several calls, and the week before, concerns were raised about similar activity among member dentists in Indiana. Additionally, dentists in Ohio, Colorado, Maine and Connecticut may also be victims of identity theft. On April 10, the IRS announced a stepped-up coast-to-coast criminal investigation to combat identity theft and refund fraud by pursuing identity thieves, preventing fraudulent refunds from being issued and helping victims of this crime. Additional information can be found on the IRS website. There are a number of steps dentists can take if they learn their identity has been used to file a tax return: Alert your own accountant and attorney as soon as possible. They can be helpful in the process. Notify the IRS Identity Protection Specialized Unit at 800.908.4490. More information on reporting tax fraud to the IRS and additional steps to take is available online. You will need to complete Form 14039 and mail it with any other documentation to the IRS. Notify the Federal Trade Commission online or by calling 877.438.4338. Contact the three credit reporting agencies to place a fraud alert on your credit report: Equifax (800.525.6285), Experian (888.397.3742), and TransUnion (800.680.7289). Notify local law enforcement and file a police report using the Identity Theft Report from the FTC. A resource with tips on how to protect yourself from identity theft is also available on ADA.org. Members are encouraged to contact the ADA Member Service Center at 800.621.8099 with questions or concerns. facebook/pages/American-Dental-Association/32252997166 echo4.bluehornet/ct/36041204:26043213382:m:1:2371162574:AEB2BB08C96C17FF94C4D5A41DDB945F:r echo4.bluehornet/ct/36041205:26043213382:m:1:2371162574:AEB2BB08C96C17FF94C4D5A41DDB945F:r echo4.bluehornet/forwardthis/ft.php?mID=15754983&em=efwmdds@aol&ch=96d3102eeb5bb250a4b22e051b275c55 Quick Links • ADA Center for Professional Success • ADA.org • Update your ADA Find-a-Dentist profile • ADA Annual Meeting • MouthHealthy.org • Action for Dental Health This email was distributed to active licensed members of the American Dental Association.
