ADARSHA MATA PURASKAR 2014, 6th December 2014, Belgaum Mrs. Sneha Suhas Mohire of Snehalaya Sparash Special School was awarded this years Adarsha Mata Puraskar for her contribution in the field of ‘Child Development & Welfare’ of ‘Special Children’. Her journey began as a helpless mother of a special child ‘Yash’ suffering from ‘Down Syndrome’, but with her determination and commitment she has turned the tide of fate. She empowered herself with pertinent vocational training in Pune and Bangalore to equip her in grooming and nurturing the best in her son ‘Yash’, who is now about 14 years old and holds National and State level awards in swimming. He is also developing his avid interest in photography, opening-up possibilities for him to become self-supporting. Sneha, did not stop here, she grouped along-with several other Special Parents in the vicinity including Snehalaya Ahmednagar linked social workers Naresh and Deepali Patil, both Special Parents from Belgaum and started a Special School for Mentally Challenged children. Lack of special education facilities in the small town of Belgaum compelled parents to visit metro cities and avail therapies, often un-affordable and unfeasible to them, as a result most such Mentally Challenged children were confined to their homes. Sparsh Special School provides such special facilities of Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Panchakarma etc. based on the different needs of children suffering from Autism, Depression, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy along-with basic education, at minimal and sometimes even free of cost to poor children. Sparsh began with just 7 and today it supports 40 special children. The Belgaum Cantonment Board appreciated their efforts and supported the initiative by starting a second school in Cantonment area where 20 more students are getting trained. Sneha has helped more than 300 parents with right counseling and has become new hope for special parents in Belgaum. Sparsh Special School is a special and bold initiative which is addressing every special child’s needs.
