ADASC is currently seeking expressions of interest from potential volunteers to join our Community Visitors Scheme. The positions are entirely voluntary, and need not take up any more than two hours per fortnight to visit a person in either residential care or in their own home, who are lonely and need a friend to chat to. There are some requirements for these positions, including the need for Federal Police checks, which are paid for by the scheme and commitment to visit at least once a fortnight is essential. Under this scheme we are also looking for people to go in to residential care facilities and host special interest groups, such as gentle exercise groups, computer groups or other skills and interests you can share. Apart from a sense of “giving back” achieved through volunteering, you can also be reimbursed for your travel to and from the visit and be able to buy a small gift for the person you are visiting such as a magazine or small bunch of flowers. If you feel you can give someone a friendly ear and a small measure of support please consider this as there are many socially isolated people out there who can benefit from this. All expressions of interest should be forwarded to [email protected] in the first instance with more information being made available in the near future.
