ADVENT: Its meaning and Symbolism. Advent, is the first day of the Christian year and always falls on the Sunday nearest to November 30th. The word Advent is derived from the Latin ‘Adventus’ meaning arrival or coming. At this time we prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus & to look forward to His coming again. It is tradition in some churches to remove flowers from the church and to have an Advent Wreath. The Clergy would wear purple or royal blue clothing during advent. THE ADVENT WREATH: is a circular wreath made from evergreen & holly. The Holly representing the crown of thorns and the evergreen the fact hat God does not change. Four candles are placed around the wreath and a fifth in the centre. The four are usually purple or three purple and the fourth is pink. The central and fifth candle is white. The first candle is lit on the first Sunday in advent. On the second Sunday in advent it is relit and the second candle lit and so on till all four are alight. Then on Christmas day the white central candle is also lit, Unlit candles represent the darkness of the world. While Sunday by Sunday we light the candles remembering on: 1st Sunday of Advent. Hope, and praying for all nations and people that they may turn to Christ. 2nd Sunday of Advent. Gods Peace. Remembering the prophets God sent to proclaim the coming Messiah. 3rd Sunday of Advent. Gods Love. Represented through John the Baptist as he baptised Jesus. 4th Sunday of Advent. Joy. Reminds us of a mothers Joy as we remember the Holy Mary Mother of Jesus. Christmas Day. The white candle is lit as we celebrate the birth of Jesus The Light of the world has come and darkness is overcome. Wishing you all a Blessed Advent and a happy Christian New year for next Sunday 1st December. Abp Pau. Life-Line Ministries
