HISTORY : Afghanistan is a largely mounainous country: mor than half the territory is above 2000 metres. Ahmad shah Durrani unified the pashtun tribes and founded Afghanistan in 1747. The country lay between the expanding might of the Russian and British empires until it won independence from national British control in 1919. A Brief experiment in democracy ended in a 1973 coup and a 1978 communist counter- coup. The soviet union invaded in 1979 to prop up major cofrontation that drew in the US and Afghanistans neighbours. In 1986 USSR withdrew in 1989. Subsequently a series of civil wars saw Kabul finally fall in 1996 to the Taliban a hardline Pakistan- sponsored movement that emerged in 1994 to end the countrys civil war and anarchy. Folowing the 11 september 2001 terrorist attacks in New York city, a US Alied and anti- Taliban Naorthern Aliance military action toppled the Taliban for sheltering Osama Bin Laden. In june 2002 Hamid Karzai leader of the interim administration was elected in a landslide vote to be the next pqesident. ECONOMY: The principal crop is wheat. Animal husbandry is iportent for meat, milk and wool. Chief mineral resousce tatural ges. The main industrial activity is the manufacture of woollen and coten textiles traditional handicrafts and wouen carpets are importent exports.
