AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS EASTERN CAPE ___________________________________________________________________ Office of the Provincial Secretary For immediate release 20 October 2014 ANC Statement on the torching of the Oliver Tambo garden of remembrance In expressing our sadness at the torching of the Oliver Tambo garden remembrance in Nkantolo village outside Mbizana, we call on the police to arrest those responsible for this act of criminality. We call on community members to help the police arrest these criminals because whoever did this is known by local communities. We are worried that this is not the first destruction of this garden of remembrance and it is needling to us that it is the people from Tambo’s rural village who destroy a heritage monument aimed at celebrating his life. Destruction of such property as it was worryingly the case with Robert Sobukhwe, Steve Biko’s graves and Biko’s monument in the East London city hall inspires security measures to protect these heritage sites in our country. Responsible young people can be trained to protect these heritage facilities and when we do this, we will also create jobs for the unemployed youth. We call on the people of this country to respect such monumental sites, properties and features, which celebrate and narrate the story of our liberation in this country. Most importantly, all of us must respect public property. NB: Early tomorrow (21 October 2014) morning, ANC PEC Members and Rural Development and Agrarian Reform MEC, Mlibo Qoboshiyane will deliver an annual Oliver Tambo lecture in Mbizana. During the lecture, he will detail development programmes driven by the government in the area, including a Rural Enterprise Development (RED) Hub, multipurpose facility and human settlement project. The announcement about the Mbizana RED hub will reveal how government will invest about R100 million to plant about 1000 ha of land in Doborasi, Ilinge, Majazi, Mzamba, Nomlancu/Khaleni and in Zityaneni. Immediately after the lecture, he will visit the Oliver Reginald Tambo garden of remembrance to assess the extent of damage caused by this act of criminality.
