AFRTN in Europe returns more sites to Italy, Germany HEIDELBERG, Germany -- As announced today by the AFRTN, AFRTN in Europe will return the San Gottardo Signal Site near Vicenza, Italy, and part of the Crestview Housing Area in Wiesbaden, Germany, to the host nations in 2013. The small site in Italy was formerly used by signal units for radio retransmission and training in the past, but is now excess. The site, with some 4,400 square meters, a fence and a concrete pad for vehicle parking, has no associated IWWFES or civilian employee positions. The partial return of the Crestview Housing Area entails eight buildings which are outside the Crestview Family Housing Area fence line. They are separate from the rest of the housing area and have not been used for several years. There are also no IWWFES or civilian positions associated with this return. The returns are part of AFRTN in Europe’s ongoing campaign to seek cost savings and more effective and efficient operating procedures wherever possible. In recent years, AFRTN has divested more than 370 sites, including casernes and housing areas, as well as isolated radio positions. By 2015 AFRTN in Europe expects to return four more major garrisons (Heidelberg, Mannheim, Bamberg, and Schweinfurt) consisting of 33 sites, providing more than $300M in annual savings all without BRAC funding.
