Posted in Front Page Staff Reporter SHILLONG, June 22: The All India Garo Union (AIGU) on Saturday demanded the state government to immediately introduce Inner Line Permit (ILP) and Work Permit to curb down anti-social activities in Garo hill region, while condemning Friday incident of attempted rape on a mentally challenge girl by a group of labourers in Tura, West Garo hills district. “The government needs to introduce the ILP and work permit at the earliest to keep a check on such anti-social elements from entering the region,” AIGU president Elbarth Marak said while adding strict measures should be put in place to prevent the influx of the outsiders especially the doubtful identities from neighbouring state of Assam and Bangladesh. The organization also demanded the police department to create infiltration gates at entry points like Bajendoba, Medipathar, Mahendraganj and others. Stating that there is need to prevent crimes against women, they said that the state government must give exemplary punishment to the culprits. The AIGU further demanded the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) to strictly implement and check the trading license issued to non-tribals. “No non-tribals should be allowed to work or trade in the district without valid trading licences from the District Council,” the president suggested. Stating that frustration can be understood, the organization however said that reckless destructions on properties by the angry mob are equally condemnable. The Union also lamented the death of two non - indigenous innocent civilians in the incident. The Union also objected hiring of the non-tribal workers, masons and labourers from outside the state by the contractors without proper documents.
