AIR OFFICER COMMANDING 1 GROUP, AIR VICE MARSHAL ATHA VISITS RAF LOSSIEMOUTH RAF Lossiemouth played host to Air Officer Commanding 1 Group, Air Vice Marshal Stuart Atha, as he inspected the station’s preparations for Quick Reaction Alert duties. The Air Vice Marshal inspected building work that will eventually house engineers and aircrew tasked with the 24 hour defence of the UK’s northern airspace from any potential threat. The newly arrived Typhoons of 6 Squadron will take over responsibility for providing the northern element of the Quick Reaction Alert force in September and will provide aircraft and crews on high alert to scramble and intercept unidentified aircraft approaching the UK. Since moving to the station in June this year, the squadron has been busily engaged with preparing for this important role. Prior to formally being cleared to operate, RAF Lossiemouth personnel will undergo a series of challenging exercises. The final test will come in the form of Exercise Moray Guardian which is due to begin next month. RAF Lossiemouth’s Station Commander, Group Captain Mark Chappell said; “The next few weeks promise to be an incredibly busy time for the station. I am certain however, that it is a challenge that we will rise to with the trademark professionalism I have come to expect from all Lossiemouth personnel.”
