AKWA IBOM PDP OFFICE SUFFERS CONGESTION …as Onofiok Luke leads Nsit Ubium Students, Ors to party office; pick nomination form BY UBONG SAMPSON The new secretariat of the Akwa Ibom People’s Democratic Party, PDP yesterday suffered its first congestion since the relocation from the former Ikot Ekpene Road office, as the Nsit Ubium representative in the State House of Assembly yesterday stormed the party office in company of a large crowd of students of Nsit Ubium extraction under the umbrella of National Association of Nsit Ubium Students, NANUS Worldwide, as well as youths, women, elders, top ranking members of the party in Nsit Ubium and professional groups. Our reporter who was a live witnessed reported that Barr Onofiok Luke’s visit to the state party office was to pick the PDP nomination form ahead of the forthcoming primaries of the party and this, our reporter gathered, was prompted by the insistence of the students and other teeming supporters on retaining him as their representative in the state house. The President of the student association, Comrade Silas Silas Obot confirmed this while speaking with community pulse, noting that as a proud beneficiary of Barrister Luke’s magnificent representation style, the student body is eager to see the lawmaker return to the state house to represent Nsit Ubium; hence, the body’s resolve made at a recent meeting of the NANUS Worldwide in Uyo which was well attended by the worldwide executive council, including heads of the 28 chapters making up the association to approach the lawmaker and restate and reaffirm their desire to see him make a return to the house. He stressed that the students’ gesture was prompted by an earlier arose need to key into the process of visible strides of development witnessed in the area, particularly in the last four years. While assuring Barr Luke of maximum support for his second term bid on the part of the entire Nsit Ubium students, the Nsit Ubium number one student noted that the decision was not imposed on them, but was unanimously reached by all the chapters which had their representatives present and participating in the processes towards every decision that was taken at the meeting, adding that it was the wish of the students that since Hon Luke was honest enough to accord them the transparent and rewarding kind of representation they have seen in the about to elapse first term, they had deemed it necessary to assist and support him in all ways within their capacity to ensure his return to the legislative chambers. Also speaking, the worldwide secretary of the association, Comrade Timothy Sunday joined the president in assuring Hon Luke of the student’s full support; and in his words: “the students had indeed decided in one of their recent meetings to key into the developmental strides of our lawmaker by mandating the 28 chapters making up the association to mobilize support for, and spread the gospel of Barr Luke’s second term to the best of their abilities. On why the students are showing so much concern on this, the student scribe queried rhetorically: “who in this state, if not the entire nation, that hasn’t heard of the impacts Onofiok Luke has made and still making in his constituency, Nsit Ubium and even beyond?” He further stressed that Luke’s performance in the entire phases of legislative engagements has been ‘wonderfully excellent’, such that it was not even surprising to him to see such a large crowd including top members of the Nsit Ubium political class turning out despite the short notice just to accompany him to pick the nomination form, adding that the lawmaker has distinguished himself in service to the people in the last three years and the people are only reciprocating the goodwill towards them through their massive endorsements. Addressing the crowd of supporters, Hon Barr Onofiok Luke noted that his resolve to run for second term was not because it is a constitutional provision or a conventional practice, if at all it is; but that it is spurred by his conviction that having garnered the experience in the first term through a robust legislation in the state legislature, there are a whole lot more he can offer for the development of the state and the state constituency. The lawmaker stressed that he has what it takes to contribute to the process of consolidating the gains of democracy, as delivered by the State Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio to the state in the past seven (7) years of his administration. He said his reasons for insisting on the party as the platform for the general elections is because he has been and will never stop being a good party man; noting that before then, he had ensured that his party at the local level was well taken care of. He further noted that every member of the party from the ward to the chapter level was given nothing less than a hundred thousand naira (N100, 000) each as seed funds for business start up, including brand new vehicles for party officials. Barr Luke further hinted that the few things that are left to be done for the party, including the building a befitting party office at the state constituency level, will be well ensured in the next four years of representation. He further thanked the party at the state level led by Obong Paul Ekpo for opening the doors of the party to have everyone included, as well as ensuring the practice of internal democracy and congratulated President Goodluck Jonathan on his endorsement by the party as a sole candidate, promising to join other supporters of his second term bid to work at the grassroot level to ensure his success. He also thanked the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu for the positive changes he has effected in the party since assuming office; the state governor for working tirelessly to ensure a level playing field for all aspirants at all levels, and finally thanked the women, elders, students and youths for accompanying him to purchase the nomination form.
