AL-AHSA — A number of gas stations in Al-Ahsa have informed motorists that they would have to pay in advance before filling their vehicles with petrol. Drivers visiting stations from 12 a.m. until 7 a.m. will be forced to pay before filling their tanks, local media reported. Gas station owners were forced into adopting this strict policy after experiencing many thefts and people driving off without paying for their gas. Abdullah Al-Nasser, a Saudi citizen, said specifying times when payment would have to be taken in advance was a good initiative and would protect gas station workers, who often fall victim to dishonest customers. He called for implementing this initiative in all gas stations nationwide. Yousif Al-Muhammad, Saudi citizen, also agreed with Al-Naser, adding such an initiative should be implemented everywhere with the coordination and support of the police and municipalities. He said: "This step should be implemented and gas station owners should be forced to install cameras to record incidents of cheating and theft." He said that this step, if implemented, would succeed in improving the relationship between the driver and gas station workers, as sometimes the latter is cheated because of their good intentions toward drivers. Drivers often abuse this trust and drive away from the gas station without paying, he said. Col. Ziyad Al-Ruqaiti, official spokesman for the Eastern Province police, said police stations always receive reports of customers driving away from gas stations without paying. He said such acts were considered money embezzlement crimes, a lesser offense in the eyes of the law.
