ALEC BALDWIN Cats and Dogs. The Adventures of Pluto Nash. Along Came Polly. 40 episodes of Knots Landing. So many classics. Alec Baldwin has had this bizarre roller coaster career, starting off as a jobbing actor, becoming a huge international star, going back to being a jobbing actor (*cough* The Cat in the Hat *cough*), then being propelled to a second stardom with the help of 30 Rock. Of course, you can’t talk about Alec Baldwin without mentioning Beetle Juice, Married to the Mob, the Hunt for Red October, Miami Blues, Prelude to a Kiss, Glengarry Glen Ross, a Streetcar Named Desire, Ghosts of Mississippi, the Cooler, the Departed – even the Shadow deserves a mention for the sheer novelty of it. (I also particularly like that the Shadow’s real name is Lamont Cranston.) BUT 30 Rock is a brilliant platform for Baldwin to do all his shtick, and also deliver some really sweet moments between Jack Donaghy and Liz Lemon. This scene is the perfect demonstration: utilizing his skills as a former stand-up/impressionist, AND giving Tracy the emotional push for a character turn in the third act. Simply marvellous.
