ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE, CHRONIC PAIN PREVENTION & TIME SPENT IN FRONT - TopicsExpress

ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE, CHRONIC PAIN PREVENTION & TIME SPENT IN FRONT OF A SCREEN! I want to share a personal experience I have been dealing with the past few months which is very telling of the place of the Alexander Technique in preventing chronic pain. Due to dealing with a temporary injury, a nerve pain got triggered in my right hip joint which was spreading in a web fashion through my right buttock and up my lower back. This was a very new experience for me and was at a loss as to how to handle it. So explored acupuncture, network chiropractic work, homeopathy, massage...you know the cycle....help help help, can someone help me?:) Everyone and everything helped to a certain point and of course, I was relying on my AT in as much as I have it integrated as part of my daily life plus added Constructive Resting time. First, I do believe that my AT was the first instrument that help me function in my daily life despite the challenge I was facing. Was able to work, exercise, meditate, pretty much do anything but at night and first thing in the morning it was not good. And at the very beginning when the nerve pain was intense, even during the day I could not prevent the muscles to react and my skeleton got off its center, leaning to the left. Then, I noticed that everything I was doing was helpful but once left on my own, I would backtrack two steps out of three made forward. So there came the F. M. question: what am I doing that is making me regress back to looking like the Tower of Pisa?:) I realized that I was leaning on my left elbow when engaged into screen time activities such as watching a video or being at the computer. Not that I was not aware of it before but it never seem to bother me and I underestimated its effect on me. Also I was often crossing my right leg over my left which was not helping either. So I inhibited in as much as I could with the awareness that screen time was a specially challenging time to stay aware. From day one, what a huge improvement! So it is clear to me, even more now that I had this experience, that outside help is sometimes necessary but if Use in All activities is not tended to, especially screen time activities which take our awareness away so easily, we end up with injuries that do not heal fully or at all which is what a chronic problem is. We get of center in one aspect of our health and if not understood or treated properly, it becomes a chronic condition. Good Use is so crucial to create healing space that the Alexander Technique can play a huge part in recovery or lack of it. And that would apply even with seemingly non use related problems. For instance, pregnant women often complain from stomach issues or back issues thinking it is associated to their temporary state when in fact, the pregnancy only enhances misuse already present before the pregnancy. Anyway, I hope this helps others take responsibility for their part in whatever chronic issue they may have. Problems rarely come out of the blue, there is no smoke without a fire and the Alexander Technique is an amazing tool to have under our belt to deal with life challenges of all kinds!
