ALICE TRIVIA FUN FACT: I was always curious about the last and final scene from The Fourth Season Episode: Good Buddy Flo. So, being that Marvin Kaplan was there during that scene, I decided to reach out to him, and ask him those questions that Ive had all of those years. Ill include the E-mail I wrote to him, followed by his reply, and photos of mine. Dear Marvin: I had a quick question about a fourth season ALICE episode, that I hope youd be able to answer for me. Its from the episode entitled, Good Buddy Flo, where she drives a semi truck, through the front of Mels Diner. Do you remember any specifics about that scene, like how they did it, and how it was done? Did they have to build anything, in particular, or did they just use what was there, already, and rebuild it again, after the episode wrapped? Secondly, Was the semi actually driven through the diner, or was it pushed? How many days and/or takes did it take to film that scene? Were the three girls/waitresses, Vera, Alice and Flo (Beth, Linda and Polly) in the cab, when it drove through the diner, or were they different people, like stunt-doubles? Also, hoe long did it take them to clean up the mess, and rebuild the set? I also like your line, I like it better as an outdoor cafe So, if my questions can be answered, as well as anything I didnt ask that you think Id be interested about knowing about this particular episode, please feel free to tell me. By the way, just out of curiosity, was it a real semi truck? Was anybody hurt and/or injured during the filming of this episode? These are questions I always wanted to know, and youre the only person from that episode, who I have contact information for. Jonathan Yuhas Dear Jonathan: That whole episode, and the way it was shot was the brainchild of our brilliant director, Marc Daniels. Marc figured out how the diner wall would break after the crash. They were breakaway, and the same chunks could be readily reassembled. Flo drove the truck. She was terrified, and not a great driver. Alice and Vera were in the front seat. The truck went slowly through one diner wall. There was one take, in front of a live audience. The breakaway pieces broke, and landed exactly as Marc had planned. My line about the outdoor cafe was an adlib I tried out in rehearsal. The producers let me keep it in. The crash was so dangerous I hid behind the counter, in case the truck didnt stop in time. No one got hurt, thanks to Marcs skill, and the diner was easily and cheaply reassembled for the next weeks episode. Hope this answers your question. Stay well, and thanks - Marvin Kaplan
