ALL Major Colleges, including Louisville practiced RACISM. Nearly ALL schools refused to allow Blacks to play basketball into the 60s. RUPP was One of the Worst but Louisville only began to recruit Black players TWO YEARS Before Kentucky did. Louisville coach Peck Hickman coached from 1944 to 1961 without recruiting a single Black player. My former Boss, Wade Houston was his first recruit along with Eddie Whitehead in 1962. The Louisville community pressured Coach Hickman to recruit Wes Unselds older brother George several years before 1962 but Coach Hickman refused. In the mid 60s UK was among the very first schools in the SEC and ACC to offer a scholarship to a Black player and In 1969, Tom Payne was the first Black to enroll at Kentucky as a basketball player. People are always mad at Kentucky for being segregated so long. but youve got to look at Louisville like people look at Rupp. To me, theyre two peas in a pod- at least at that time, stated George Unseld, older brother of Wes and long time Athletic Director of The Jefferson County Public School System AS FOR ME PERSONALLY, IN NO WAY AM I SUGGESTING THAT ADOLPH RUPP BE GIVEN A BREAK. I WILL FOREVER FIND IT SHAMEFUL THAT AN ARENA IS NAMED IN HIS HONOR.
