ALS Ice Bucket Challenge: There has been a lot of buzz about the Ice Bucket Challenge. Please know that it violates federal ethics laws for USAF personnel to participate in the challenge in their official capacities, to include... - being doused in uniform - using Government e-mail or phones to challenge someone - placing pictures of the event on the units FaceBook page - or to solicit for charity in the workplace. BACKGROUND: The Ice Bucket Challenge supposedly originated with a former college athlete suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). If you receive a challenge, you are required to video yourself dumping a bucket of ice water on your head within 24 hours. Then, you only have to donate $10 to the charity instead of $100. You also earn the right to challenge another group of participants. ETHICS CONCERNS: Simply put, the AF cannot endorse or give preferential treatment to a charitys fundraising, no matter how worthy the cause. Additionally, participating in this event would constitute unauthorized fundraising in an official capacity in violation of federal ethics rules. Other concerns include soliciting personnel junior in rank or grade and using AF time and equipment to fundraise for a specific charity. PERSONAL CAPACITY: AF personnel may participate in the challenge if it is strictly in their personal, unofficial capacity, using their own FaceBook account and backyard event site.
