ALTRUISM ’14 (TONY AJIBADE TONYBLAZE’S MANIFESTO) Change they say is the only permanent thing, therefore it is inevitable. And as an agent of change which I am, I am proactive and I shouldn’t just react to change but be part of that change. However the form of change I want to effect in FASSA will not totally disregard the already existing structure and work done. I will be concerned with moving the association from its present state to its revered destination. There isn’t much conundrum as to what the present state of FASSA is. However the big question is where is or where should be its revered destination? I say to you, “Achieving the basic purposes of its existence.” Then what are the basic purposes of existence of FASSA? Solidarity, Protection of the rights and interests of its members And Synergy. These have not been achieved in FASSA because we are “not strongly integrated”, no thanks to our “scattered structures”. When you consider again the fact that in most cases, we only take courses together in our first (after which we go our separate ways); you better understand the disparity being generated. Another challenge we are bedevilled with is “FASSAites commitment to FASSA. So many of us seem to have forgotten there is nothing like a FASSA without FASSAites. Now that I have identified what our major challenges are, what my “Altruistic administration” (FASSAites oriented leadership) will focus on is to create platforms that will unite and bring us together (we need to know there is unity even in diversity: United we stand, divided we fall). Below are some of the platforms: A VIBRANT LITERARY AND DEBATING SOCIETY I intend to resuscitate and bring life and vibrancy into our literary and debating society. This will resuscitate the poetic and vibrant mind of science students and showcase our exceptional talents on global platforms. It will enable us engage confidently in issues of local and global concern thus makes us versatile as students. PROPER AND EFFECTIVE INFORMATION DISSEMINATION To complement the use of all forms of platforms and media open to the office of the PRO for proper information dissemination, I see the bringing back to life of “FASSA Bulletin” which has been gone for years as most effective in bridging the communication gap and surmounting its imminent challenges. This will in all ways encourage FASSAites to be more committed and dedicated to the success of the association. With this, I believe the FASSA of our dream will be achieved. REGULAR CONGRESS One of the major ways to achieve our aims is to go by the constitution and having a regular congress as decisions made at this level are supreme and must be considered executed for the smooth running of the association. It is also in a bid to carry all FASSAites along and respect their opinions in the administration. SUGGESTION BOX AND FASSA NOTICE BOARD Also in a bid to fight the docile level of FASSAites interest and participation in the association, to make them see reasons to be more committed, I see a need to give special recognition to FASSAites opinions. Therefore, the introduction of FASSAites suggestion box will go a long way in involving the people in governance through their personal opinions and observations. When FASSAites opinions have been collated, the board will be meant for feedback on the raised issues in their suggestions and observations. Also personal issues that have to do with FASSA Executive council that may not necessarily pass through the Press will be aired there. Everything about the activities of the executives will be there for transparency and accountability. FASSA n I/MEET YOUR DEAN Ina bid to mitigate the challenge of disinterestedness, lack of commitment and unhealthy gap amongst members of our dear association, the idea of a “FASSA n I” was born. It is an idea that will create a social platform where student from every departments and levels will gather to mix, socialize and most importantly share ideas. During the event, it will be an opportunity for the students to meet with the dean, sub deans and some members of faculty management to discuss issues of the faculty that are probably beyond the tentacles of the association and at the same time chat a way forward. This will go a long way in ensuring good relationships amongst ourselves and the management. EXAM PERIOD WELFARISM Since the primary assignment of every leader is the welfare of the followers, ensuring that the followers’ needs at every point are met. The idea of exam period welfare package was born. This will include distribution of food items during exam period to FASSAites who are facing serious challenges in terms of proper feeding and financial buoyancy. RESTAURANT A good lunch benefits a student by giving the energy to remain alert during class time. A healthy lunch helps maintain peak academic performance. But it is a serious poser in the faculty of science to students before they can have a “proper lunch” they will have to “travel” to Tedder, Mellanby or SUB . In order to make this thing of the past, a befitting restaurant that can serve this pivotal purpose will be introduced in line with UI social works and planning procedure to establish such. PUBLIC/PERSONALITY LECTURES If given the mandate to serve, efforts will be invested in ensuring a befitting public/personality lecture that will be one amongst many. This will offer us a platform to engage our leaders in different sectors of the economy to critically dissect issues that are of national and local importance. And also explore such platforms for the growth of the association. THE REVAMPING OF FASSA WEBSITE Efforts will be put in place to keep FASSA website alive, where issues about our association past and present, the activities of the executives will be uploaded on the website time to time. In just a fingertip away, you are already informed about the association. Let us set the pace to reclaim our lost glory. Now I have intimated the good people of FASSA about my plans and I believe they will help me ensure that these needs are met by using their mandates rightly. I therefore at this juncture crave your indulgence, Greatest FASSAites, Intellectualists, Men and women who will not lose their individuality in a crowd, Men and women who cannot be bought and who stand for what they want to help me actualize this “FASSAites oriented” goals by using your right of enfranchisement well, that is by voting me as your president. REMEMBER! YOU CANNOT EAT YOUR CAKE AND HAVE IT Give me a place to stand, and I will move the world!
