ALWAYS ASK… THE STORY In a rather rare occasion, a company CEO walks past the employees holding a piece of paper and stops in front of a paper shredder. A staff member; (who in this case we’ll call John) seated next rises up and requests to give the CEO a helping hand. Sure, sure go ahead and thanks a lot, goes the CEO’s reply and the CEO left. He quickly inserts the paper into the shredder and gladly goes back to his seat. Minutes later, a call comes from the CEO’s office and goes like, John, once you have photocopied it, scan and send me the original copy, it is the only evidence that we paid for the cargo held in Dubai. It’s very urgent…… You can only imagine what transpired later. THE PERSPECTIVE In many occasions people feel a little shy or somewhat fearful to make inquiries since most of them seem obvious. Let me give you examples, you walk into a post-modern facility, you’re not sure of how the lifts operate, since you do not want to look “silly” you just indulge only to be stuck in the lift thereafter; or you are in town, headed to a meeting at Building X, you have never been there before, but since you do not want to be seen as silly, again you do not ask for directions only to spend thirty minutes trying to locate a building which you might have bypassed. Or better still, you walk into a corporate meeting where the caterers are using sophisticated kettles which you have no idea how they works, it is time to serve yourself. Instead of asking around how to go around it, you end up splashing coffee all over. In the long-run we end up looking even more “silly” just because we did not ask or consult. THE LESSONS It is important to always ask when not sure about something or make necessary inquiries. As my namesake #jk, the famous Steve Jobs once said, “Stay hungry, stay foolish”. You see, there’s no monopoly of knowledge and information. Remember, if you do not ask, the answer will always be no. This far, my parting shot to you would be, never be afraid to ask for help or consult; asking for help, support or advice is a sign of strength and courage. It is safer to ask than to be sorry. Have a splendid weekend. #CampusCampanile-Obuogo Steve
