AMAZING GRACE John Newton had religious training as a child, but after the death of his Mother he began to reject Christianity and lived a Godless life. He joined his Father on sea voyages and at one point was taken captive by a slave trader who nearly made him a slave. He became a slave dealer himself, captaining his own ship. One day the ship came into a great storm. As the wind blew and waves swept across the deck, Newton feared for his life. Things became worse until he cried out to God....that if he reached port safely, he would become Gods slave. The storm died down and Newton kept his promise. Years later, Newton wrote of his conversion and changed life in the hymn Amazing Grace
