AMAZING IMPACT RESULTS Street Child World Cup – RIO 2014 International Pope Francis blessed the SCWC and declared it a ‘significant initiative’. Prince Harry met with our Brazil office during the FIFA World Cup. David Beckham endorsed the Street Child World Cup giving it his full support. World Cup winner Bebeto attended and signed the campaign for revised Brazilian government policy for street children World Cup winner and Arsenal ‘invincible’ Gilberto Silva attended the tournament and is now a Global Ambassador Football legend Zico gave his support and a training session to Team Brazil Girls UK Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne attended Finals alongside Lord Deighton, former Chief Exec of the London Olympic and Paralympic Games Argentina Team Argentina honoured at a reception held by the Ministry of Labour in Buenos Aires, and shared their experiences with Carlos Tomada, the Minister of Labour and Security A major Argentinean TV station covered the boys’ participation, leading to some supporters offering assistance, and a donation of much needed paint to upkeep the facilities. Brazil The Brazilian Government have invited Team Brazil from Fortaleza to host a national summit for street children in November 2014 in Brasilia. The summit will advise on Government policy in dealing with street connected children across Brazil. Representatives from all 27 states of Brazil will be in attendance as part of the “Children are not from the streets” campaign. Team Brazil girls continue to train hard in the Complexo da Penha favela where girls football has never had such a proud platform. The girls have spoken at a wide range of events from a Model United Nations day at the Rio British School to the Street Football World Conference during the FIFA World Cup. The girls also held a training session with World Cup winners Patrick Vieira and Fabio Cannavaro and attended a last 16 game of the FIFA World Cup. The team met the President of Burundi with whom they discussed the issues facing street children. The team were greeted with a press conference and the Minister for Youth and Sports hosted a gala dinner to celebrate the Team. According to local partner New Generation, since representing their country at the SCWC, they receive much more respect from the authorities. Egypt Team Egypt were hosted on the biggest national chat show to talk about their experience. One of the participating organisations presented in front of a government committee, which included consultants to the president regarding the street children issue; the two players who travelled to the SCWC were presented examples of their success and the organization has received much government support since. England The girls from Team England were inspired by the Street Child World Cup, the young people they shared the experience with and the challenges they have all collectively overcome. The girls want to continue to support their friends from Rio and street children across the world, and are determined to raise awareness and support through future fundraising events. The girls Street Child World Cup participation was covered in a documentary on BBC3 watched by 500,000 viewers. India One player was reintegrated back to his home state of Kerala. He was offered a place to study at the Malabar Police School, and he now studies there and plays for their football team. The rest of the team have been reintegrated with family nearby or continue to live and study at the Karunalaya centre. Returning home from Brazil, Karunalaya was chosen to select two girls to participate in the Homeless World Cup 2014 in Santiago, Chile. Participation in the SCWC has raised awareness of Karunalaya’s work in India, and people have come forward to offer support. A company has offered their services to refresh their website and rework the logo and homepage. Indonesia In advance of the SCWC, Team Indonesia met the President. On their return they were hosted on Indonesia’s foremost Friday night social show, and other breakfast TV shows. Kenya Team Kenya’s Captain Benson has been asked to sit on the Children’s Assembly since returning from Rio. National Director Bokey Achola has presented on three radio programmes with several local meetings on the issues faced by street children. Liberia Team Liberia returned home to a heroes’ welcome, from families, sponsors and the local press. The team were the most-read national News story in Liberia for 2 days during the SCWC. As ambassadors for street children, Team Liberia have travelled to Sierra Leone to speak about their experiences, and also made presentations in their communities and their schools. They have been trained as health ambassadors to help in the fight against Ebola in their communities, as the country struggles to deal with the outbreak. Mauritius The team were surprised by a welcome from their parents at the airport. The boys now meet once a month to see how they can help the project Safire and work on their advocacy action plan. Participation in the SCWC has improved the credibility of Safire as an organisation in Mauritius. They were called to share their experiences on national television and to debate on specific issues faced by children. One player was invited to participate in a videoconference with the UN in Geneva to discuss the situation of street children in Mauritius. Mozambique Local project Meninos de Mozambique report that they are respected more as a serious and committed organisation, by families and in the communities where they work. On their return from Brazil, MDM organised meetings for the team with other street children from surrounding neighbourhoods. They talked about the event, the conference, the experiences they had. The girls also made presentations in the schools where they study. Nicaragua The children have shared their experiences via a number of media outlets. This led to a meeting with the Ministry of Family, at which the children could share their demands and opinions on the topics that affect them. Pakistan Team Pakistan have led a 13-city tour called “I am Somebody”. As a result Pakistan’s National Assembly has passed a resolution for social protection for the countries 1.5m street children! 7,000 supporters (including the media and members of the National and Provincial Assembly) met team Pakistan as they landed at Karachi Airport. At 4am. HBL (Habib Bank Limited) has signed an MOU with Azad Foundation to support and nurture grassroots football programmes with street children in Pakistan. Team Pakistan are also now HBL’s brand ambassadors The team were received at a special session of the provincial assembly of Sindh An audience of 2 million watched their participation in the SCWC. Philippines All children are either back in high school or one or two are now going on to university next year on scholarships. Tanzania The SCWC winners got to meet their Prime Minister and the constitutional parliament of Tanzania consisting of 600 MP’s was temporarily suspended to welcome the team back. On arrival in their hometown Mwanza the team were met by a cavalcade of 50 motorbikes and 30 vehicles. Following their return, Team Tanzania (Caretakers of the Environment) were awarded vital new land for their shelter in Mwanza. The organisation had lost land which was ‘reclaimed’ by local government with no viable alternative on offer. However following their success the local government had a change of heart and awarded a more suitable plot. Team Tanzania’s Captain was selected for the Tanzania U15 national team. He travelled to Botswana to represent his country at the Olympic Youth tournament. Support from a local bank has ensured school fees for each child until they graduate school. Zimbabwe The girls are enrolled in local football teams, and are participating in Grassroot Soccer activities so that they can be peer educators for other children GRSZ: “More people are starting to see [street children] as members of society” Media The Street Child World Cup received unprecedented media attention for the street child issue across five continents. Here are some stats on how the event was received on social media: 90,000 views on YouTube 2,490 additional followers on twitter 5,124 additional likes on facebook The SCWC was covered in film documentaries for BBC3, O Globo Brasil, BT Sport, FIFA Futbol Mundial. It will feature in Street Kids United 2, due for cinema release in 2015
