AN APPEAL BY PFF MADE TO ASIAN HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION IN THE WAKE OF LIFE THREATS RECEIVED BY PFF LEADERSHIP IN DISTRICT BADIN ========================================================= PAKISTAN: Name of victim: Fisherfolk Community of district Badin, Sindh province Names of alleged perpetrators: Date of incident: September 20, 2014 Place of incident: District Badin. I am writing to voice my deep concern regarding life threats received by Mr. Mithan Mallah, president Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum, district Badin on September 20, 2014. At 9:55 am in the morning on the dated mentioned above. Mr. Mithan Mallah received a phone call from Dost Ali Chandio president Rural Elevation Services Society, a civil society partner organization of GEF-UNDP. After about an hour of receiving the phone call, 09 armed men on 3 motorbikes arrived at the office of Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum Badin and inquired of Mr. Mithan Mallah. Upon knowing of his absence at the office, the armed men left the office leaving the grave threats. Mandhir Development Society, a local civil society organization that is implementing a UNDP funded project has been involved in creating unjustified issues for the fisherfolk communities of coastal belt covering district Badin. Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum has always been struggling for the livelihood sources of local fisherfolk communities, stoppage of the flow of contaminated water in inland sweet water reservoirs, mobilizing indigenous fisherfolk for the use of legally approved fishing nets, job opportunities in Fisheries Department for the youth from fisherfolk communities. For this PFF had always been in close coordination with the concerned line departments as well. Fisherfolk communities in district are fully aware of the fact that the use of legally banned fishing nets for fishing in inland water reserves will harm them. Moreover, they are aware of the fact that the use of such banned fishing shall surely deplete their own sources of livelihood. For this, fisher community of district Badin had always been abiding by the this legal action. Fisherfolk communities in the district have always been together with Fisheries Department Badin and other CSOs implementing concerned projects. We demand that UNDP-GEF must discontinue the partnership with this organization. Such mis use of Aid is quite unacceptable. We demand that perpetrators must be brought to law. Otherwise such patronized criminal activities would further harm small scale fisherfolk which are already marginalized.
