AN EXCERPT FROM CHAPTER 7 "A NEW MACHINE (PART 2)" "At center stage we held a brief meeting. The house soundman looked over our set list, making notes, assuring us he could give me delay from the processors he had for the mixing console. It wouldn’t be exactly what we were used to, but once I started playing each song he could adjust it to the proper timing, which basically meant we would have to extend the introductions to certain songs until he got the timing right. This seemed to be such a relief, except for the fact that I realized that I didn’t have any distortion at all, which was another big problem, especially since the clock was ticking away. Jeff told me to grab my coat; he’d take me to a nearby music store. I got into his car and we headed towards the New York City skyline. As we drove, he pointed out Joe Pesci’s restaurant, and said that sometimes you’d see him or Robert De Niro there. As we passed through the neighborhood he pointed out numerous spots where The Sopranos were filmed. I had not yet begun to watch that show and I knew nothing about it, so I had no idea what he was talking about. I just looked around and pleasantly nodded. He was proud showing me around, I was tolerating his spontaneous guided tour, not because I didn’t care, but I had a lot weighing on my mind. I was hoping I’d be able to fix the problem, and I was worried about making an excellent first impression, especially since Marc took a chance on us, and I didn’t want to let him (or anyone else) down."
