AN HONEST LETTER TO ELLEN DEGENERES: A post I made directly on Ellens page: I admire you for fighting so hard for the rights of gay, persons in society everywhere and while I support those rights for all, regardless of who they are, where they live, their age and skin colour, I am dismayed by the fact you do not support my lifestyle and that of my fellow countrymen, Canadian and Newfoundland sealers. I do not eat seal (by choice) but I do not condone the condemnation by people who base their assumptions on what they are told rather than on being well informed and then making a decision. FACT: Seals, if left alone, get into our fishing nets, destroying them and the catch in our nets. If left alone, they will lead to the eating of our very livelihood, (fish), leaving thousands of our families living in poverty or having to move away with no money and no work. By careful and strictly monitored and regular inspections by government officials, we shoot, not club, only older seals, not whitecoats. To do otherwise would be breaking the law, seizure of our equipment and hefty fines. Quotas are set yearly and most of the time those quotas are not met. We are, and always have been known for our hospitality. Remember 9/11, when Newfoundlanders in Gander played host to roughly 6000 during the horrific events of that tragic day? We made and have remained lifelong friends with those people. We wish to remain friends with our American neighbours. Please, google the Canadian Sealing Federation, google , like us, is your friend. Please make your decision a WELL INFORMED one, not one sided. Thank you, Wanda White, an ordinary Newfoundlander.
