AN INTRODUCTION TO TEMPLES ALONG THE COAST OF CANGGU In addition to Pura Tanah Lot there are other nearby temples that deserve exposure. Along a 1 kilometer stretch westward around Canggu you will find several temples, all which have different unique functions; Pura Pekendungan, Pura Penataran, Enjung Galuh, Jro Kandang, Batu Bolong and Batu Mejan, all located along the shoreline. Pura Pekendungan is unified with Pura Tanah Lot. At first this place was called Alas Kendung and used as a place for meditation or yoga with the purpose of acquiring sacred inspiration or inner light before continuing ones spiritual journey. In Pura Pekendungan there is a Holy Keris called Ki Baru Gaja which was said to have the power to conquer blight in Bali. The Keris was a gift during the 15th Century from Danghyang Nirartha to the Beraban Village and is now stored at Puri Kediri. Pura Jero Kandang was built by the Beraban villagers with the purpose of praying for protection of their livestock and plants to keep them healthy and disease-free. Pura Enjung Galuh is located near Pura Jero Kandang. According to old lontar manuscripts, this temple was built to worship Dewi Sri and is used worshiped and prayed to for the blessing of prosperity and fertility for all. Pura Batu Bolong, (next to Old Mans) is a temple where purifying ceremonies are performed with the intent to purify nature from negative elements. Pura Batu Bolong is a temple with a long history worth a more in-depth introduction and i will write more about this temple shortly. Meanwhile, Pura Batu Mejan, (next to Echo Beach) known by its sacred water sources is where one got holy water for sacred purification ceremonies with the function to neutralize negative powers and recharge spiritual aspiration and inspiration. At the Batu Mejan Temple was once counted nine sources of fresh water coming out from below the ocean. These sources of fresh water are only approachable at dead low-tide. Worth to acknowledge is the mutual importance that all these temples have along the shoreline of Canggu and nearby Villages. Eventhough they are separately located they do all serve particular spiritual functions as a divine network for the villagers, followers of Dharma Hindu Bali. Some temple have general functions as ceremonies and worship on particular holy days while others have more specific functions to be carried out for the benefit of the villagers and community. The ceremonies, rituals and processions are made to externally educate and enlighten us with symbolism as active and constant reminder of the cycle and stages of life that we all inevitably will experience. Internally these ceremonies carry deep Hindu philosophies that aspire for balance and peace from within the heart of mankind, for balance and peace in nature and the blessing from great realms beyond human comprehension. Thank you for taking the time to read this. I hope this might work as an inspiration to find out more about the heritage from the balinese ancestors that are to be found in the Canggu area. There is much to be found and much to learn from it.
