AN OPEN LETTER TO LUKAS PODOLSKI, GERMAN FOOTBALLER: Dear Mr Podolski, I see from various news reports that you expect Scotland to play a “dirty” game in the upcoming international match between our two nations. I would be greatly interested in the modern player’s definition of “dirty”, given that the match officials stop play and award a free kick at the slightest physical contact nowadays. Perhaps it is if a player attempts to hit an opponent with his handbag, or ruffles one’s carefully coiffured locks when the television cameras are in attendance. Had you been lining up against a side containing players such as Greig, Holton, Bremner, Mckay, Souness, Miller, McLeish and Jordan to name but a few, I could see some justification for your trepidation, but alas, players of that ilk belong to another era. Yes, they were hard men, but they could couple their physical assets with an abundance of skill (well, we may make an exception for the late Jim Holton), indeed, were they available for Sunday’s match, I would fully expect you to withdraw with a thigh strain, as seems to be the vogue. Good luck on Sunday, you will need it. I am, yours in sport, Alan Bowie
