AN UNEXPECTED BLESSING Have you ever gone to do something for someone thinking that you were going to be a blessing, but wound up being the one who was blessed? This is exactly what happened to me on Wednesday. I had the opportunity to go and volunteer at Stillwaters Assisted Living Facility in Lake City for some fun time with the residents in Keepsake. Keepsake is for Alzheimer’s and Dementia patients. I have to tell you that, at first, I felt a little uneasy. I wasn’t sure how they would respond to me. I was out of my comfort zone. However, it didn’t take long for me to warm up to them and them to me. My friend Leslie got out the party hats, put on some music and we gave them a lollipop. They had their snack and then it was dance time. I was amazed at how well some of them could dance. They really started to loosen up and have fun and so did I. After some dancing, I threw the ball to some of them. There were some who had great hand/eye coordination. It was loads of fun. After we danced for a while and played ball, I sat down with my friend Leslie and began chatting with some of them. I asked them questions about their family and when their birthdays were. Most of them could remember their families and most could remember their birthdays. I left there feeling so blessed. It was so rewarding. I’m so glad that I didn’t allow my fear of not knowing what to expect get in the way of receiving a blessing. It was absolutely the highlight of my week. I’m not sure if it’s because dementia is close to my heart. My grandmother who had always gotten me from the time I was small developed Dementia in her early 80’s. She couldn’t even remember who I was. Spending time with these ladies made me think of my grandmother, but it also made me think how fortunate I am that I can still remember my loved ones. I left there with tears in my eyes, not because I was sad, but I was happy I got to be a part of something so special. I thank God for the time I got to spend with them. We danced, we sang, we played ball, we talked. What a blessing! They may not remember that I was even there, but that’s okay. I received AN UNEXPECTED BLESSING, one I will never forget. I can’t wait to go back and see them again. Colossians 3:23-24 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. Brothers and sisters, whatever you do, do it for Lord, not for men. The Lord will bless you and reward you, because when you serve others, you are serving Christ the Lord. Have a blessed and glorious day! ~~Michelle Thomas~~
