AN UNPLANNED LIFE: A CATASTROPHIC TRAGEDY An UNPLANNED life is very costly. It is an expensive risk never worth taking. It makes unbearable demands at times when chips are down and youthful energies are either gone or disappearing. It denies access to the basic necessities of life when they are most needed in the later life. It makes growth retrogressive and prepares the future for an unavoidable and a catastrophic encounter with misery, pain and frustration. It is a deliberate attack and war on the self and the consequences are either immediate or delayed for a later time. An unplanned life is a ‘vision-less life’ and even more ‘foolishness’ in the guise of laziness, procrastination or even a total dependence on others for too long or the use of them as a life’s meal ticket. Unplanned Life is the ‘devil’s work place’ because it would sooner or later breed all categories of evil not excluding jealousy towards those who were courageous in planning theirs. Lamentations as ‘had I known’ is commonly heard from its victims; at other times, some others in this category who are not honest to take responsibility for their irresponsibility towards the self look for others to blame. May I consider ‘’no planning’’ as the greatest act of carelessness, insensitivity and stinginess to the self. Planning is a duty each one owes to the self. Not to plan one’s life is to prepare one’s self for redundancy. No one needs a ‘nobody’ but rather, everyone needs a ‘somebody’. With an unplanned life, the self ends up as an entity of bitterness, misery, regrets, unending grudges and negativity. Happiness is so far away from such lives. Such persons are victims of their own self and end up as a problem to everyone. They are liabilities and the society of today has no place for liabilities since everyone is so busy with achievements to prepare a better world for the coming generation of humanity. A planned life is a treasured gift to the self. Without having to wait for gifts from others, this is one unique gift each person can offer to the self. The capacity of the mind also dwindles as age grows older. Eccl. 3:3 says ‘there is time for everything’. Time is a factor; it is an asset; it is God’s gift to each Human Life and should be used appropriately as at when due. Time is not static; it moves and it changes. It doesn’t come with the same opportunities. Our energies today will definitely not be at the same level tomorrow. A careful analysis confirms that one is most unlikely to reap from were he/she has not sown. Sowing seeds today is planning for the future; investing today is planning for the future; making savings today is planning for the future; securing your health, your welfare and your home is planning for the future; professionalizing and developing your goals is planning for the future. Planning one’s life should be immediate and urgent. Delay is a devil’s idea. To plan ones’ life is to be fair to life. Life can be unfair to those who are unfair to it. For the future to give life, life has to give planning to the future. To plan life is to prepare for the future and when the future fails completely, it only suggests that life first suffered from the kwashiorkor of no planning. Having dreams are not enough, there should be laid down personal goals and consistent, progressive steps of action towards its achievement by first seeking competence through self improvement in those areas of interest, and then connecting with others in the process of creating wealth. It is a ‘do it yourself’ thing. God is there for us. As life is created, so also can wealth, happiness and the future be created. It’s not about what your parents didn’t do for you; it’s about what you are failing today to do for yourself. An unplanned life has catastrophic consequences.‘’By the sacred wounds of Jesus, we are healed’.
