AN UNSUNG HERO Kathleen McKee, wife of Pastor Jack McKee, will be acknowledged at a special event on Friday 10 October at 12.30 for her 25 years of service to Hobby Horse Playgroup and to the wider community. Kathleen made much of very little when she launched Hobby Horse in the Old Stadium on the Shankill Road in September 1989. Since then she has seen hundreds of children come through the Playgroup, with many of them coming back later in life with their own children to attend the same Playgroup. It has not all always been a “bed of roses” as at times she has witnessed tragedies that affected the children and their families. On one occasion she moved her playgroup into church halls for several weeks, during the Loyalist Feud, so families that had been removed from their homes could store their furniture. On an another occasion the Playgroup suffered the tragic loss of one of their children who died in a house-fire along with his father and grandmother. All this and more as she battled with other issues within the community, not least the savage attack on her home at 3.30 am when every window was smashed and her car was bombed and destroyed. Yet regardless of the all the difficulties, Kathleen McKee has stood firm and remained committed to the children in her care from both the Shankill and Falls communities and including several children with special needs. Hobby Horse Playgroup staff and friends will use this 25 Year Celebration to honour Kathleen. They will be joined by VIP Guest of Honour Baroness May Blood. This is open to everyone. If you would like to attend, please contact Chara at hobbyhorsebelfast@gmail or telephone 02890 239572
